What is Emotional Competence?

Emotional competence is a shortened way to describe Social and Emotional Competence (SEC). It is key life skills that help individuals navigate emotions, connect with others, and make thoughtful choices. It empowers people to recognize their feelings, handle challenges constructively, form meaningful relationships, and pursue personal and collective goals—laying the foundation for success in both personal and professional settings.

I work with leaders who are facing challenges with conflict, friction, and competing priorities and its impact on workplace climate and learning.
I am in the business of making the world a better place. I’m a teacher. I am also a mother, a PhD, an advocate, a researcher, a breath work facilitator, and member of two international peace and mindfulness organizations.
I’ve spent decades in schools as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and union leader. At the heart of my work is a deep knowledge about the magnificent power of humans to create, connect, and solve problems when they are fed, housed, and socially and emotionally well.

Dr. Stephanie Bacon
This PD was so meaningful - it left me inspired to focus on the human connection as the foundation of education. I learned tools for understanding layers of emotion and the value of boundaries. Most of all, the things I learned have helped me in my life beyond the classroom. I am working on relationships that I had previously given up on. Who knew PD could impact the way we see the world? Steph is knowledgeable, vulnerable, and through these qualities, the training feels relevant and real.
